Facts: Social Enterprise in Uganda

A precise number of social enterprises in Uganda is not known. However, a study conducted by the IMF in 2020 estimated that approximately 27,400 social enterprises are operating in Uganda, employing 62,300 people directly. It projected the sector to create approximately 86,000 direct jobs by 2030.
The concept of social entrepreneurship is still new to many Ugandans despite the fact that social entrepreneurship has existed for several decades. Government is yet to recognize social enterprises, as there is no policy or directorate regulating them.

Social enterprises in Uganda are facing many challenges and issues that range from lack of access to finance, lack of existing policies, accreditation, insufficient expertise and knowledge, and lack of understanding and awareness among others.

To overcome the challenges, FUSE is employing strategies and initiatives that are focusing on strengthening the key enablers to form a strong social entrepreneurship ecosystem to support social enterprise at all stages of the business life cycle.
