Social enterprises are businesses that exist to solve social, environmental or cultural challenges in our communities. They are founded by visionary men and women who embed purpose into everything they do. They generate social impact through an entrepreneurial approach that is not just boosting Uganda's economy but also social, cultural and environmental aspects, of instilling good values while at the same time making a positive difference in our lives.
FUSE is Uganda's national certifier of social enterprises. We are building the largest validated dataset of social enterprises in the country.
Their reason for being is to solve a social, environmental, or cultural problem.
They prioritise purpose, people and planet over profit in day-to-day decisions.
They operate with a self-sustaining revenue model.
The majority of any surplus is reinvested towards their mission.
Their legal and financial structures are designed to protect and lock in purpose for the long term.
Through the years, cross-sector collaboration has expanded significantly between visionary founders, emerging ventures, community leaders, and public institutions to tackle pressing social, environmental or cultural problems.
Social enterprises in Uganda are making significant contributions to the country's development by combining business strategies with a clear mission to solve social, environmental, and cultural challenges. Their impact is primarily observed in the following key areas:
Social enterprises provide critical employment and training opportunities, particularly for vulnerable groups, youth, and women, helping to tackle issues like unemployment.
They bridge the gap in underserved markets by supplying essential products and services such as healthcare, education, and renewable energy that address unmet community needs.
By adopting entrepreneurial approaches, social enterprises operate with self-sustaining revenue models. They drive innovation in critical sectors like agriculture and sanitation, contributing to both economic growth and environmental well-being.
Many of these enterprises prioritise people and the planet over profit, with some donating at least 51% of their profits through strategic charitable partnerships to further amplify their social impact.
Through these activities, social enterprises play a crucial role in building community resilience and promoting social inclusion across Uganda.
Social enterprises adopt a mission, a goal to create value but that doesn't stop other forms of businesses from infiltrating them.
They operate alongside companies and organisations that may present misleading information about their true impact. This landscape makes social enterprise certification a necessity, as it provides a transparent and verifiable standard to distinguish genuine, mission-driven businesses from those that misrepresent their social, environmental, or cultural contributions.
